Michelin's ZL-Gravel tires and Enkei's ERO1 rally wheels are a truly impressive combination in the dirt-they look pretty gnarly too.

Sway-A-Way came upwith this radical rear suspension design, because of the Focus' rather non-standard rear suspension configuration. Without the ability to fit a coil-over shock and spring under the car, suspension options were limited. This cantilever design offers far more travel and a rising rate motion ratio to help prevent bottoming.

Sway-A-Way built custom front struts for our car. Although the Focus uses a one-off design, the company is looking into other rally applications including the Subaru WRX and Impreza.

Ford Focus Coupe Engine
The overall view of the Focus' engine bay shows the T3/T04E Innovative Turbo Systems turbocharger as well as much of F-MAX's Focus street turbo kit plumbing.

A close up of the exhaust side of the engine reveals the close quarters in which Innovative and F-MAX were forced to work. Luckily, the packaging is efficient enough to allow for a T3/T4 hybrid turbo and a gorgeous Tial wastegate.

The turbo we're currently using is Innovative Turbo Systems T3/T04E, which has a rather disproportionate compressor wheel. The large compressor, however, lets the turbo make full boost below 3000 rpm-exactly what the Focus needs with its tall gears.

Building a rally car requires lots of custom fabrication. Here you can see the F-MAX intercooler, which is actually part of the company's bolt-on turbo kit. Below that, however, is the bash bar, which protects the intercooler from absorbing the weight of the entire car on a nose landing. Also visible are the light bar mounts and tow hook.

The menacing front view of the Focus shows the hole in the bumper support necessary to get airflow to the massive Fluidyne radiator.

Tuning took place at F-MAX Fabrication in Escondido, Calif. on the company's Dynapack chassis dynamometer. Our car was tuned very mildly in an effort to survive the rigors of rally abuse. It made 150 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque at an ultra low 3800 rpm. This same turbo kit has been known to make as much as 187 hp when dialed in on a stock Focus engine.
